Bringing Assessment Services Closer to Learners with Disabilities in Kadibo
A milestone for inclusive education as a new Educational Assessment and Resource Centre opens at Rabuor Primary School
Bringing Assessment Services Closer to Learners with Disabilities in Kadibo
A Milestone for Inclusive Education
Children with disabilities in Kadibo Sub-county faced significant challenges in accessing assessment services needed for educational placement and support. Parents and caregivers were often required to travel long distances—up to 50 kilometers to Awasi in Nyando Sub-County to obtain functional assessments through the Educational Assessment and Resource Centre (EARC). This not only increased costs for families but also delayed the identification, assessment, and support of learners with disabilities.
The commissioning ceremony of the new EARC at Rabuor Primary School brought together key education stakeholders.
A New Chapter for Kadibo
This challenge has now been significantly addressed through the establishment and commissioning of a new EARC office at Rabuor Primary School. The commissioning ceremony was officiated by the County Special Needs Education (SNE) Coordinator, alongside the Sub-county Director of Education and the Sub-county Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), marking a major achievement for inclusive education in the region.
Improving Access to Assessment Services
The new EARC brings essential assessment services closer to learners and their families, enabling timely identification, functional assessment, placement, and referral of children with disabilities. Families who previously spent considerable time and resources traveling to Awasi can now access these services within their locality.
Assessment services are now accessible to learners and their families within Kadibo Sub-county.
The centre is expected to support learners with various disabilities by facilitating early intervention, educational planning, and linkage to appropriate support services. This will contribute to improved school enrolment, retention, participation, and learning outcomes for children with disabilities.
Strengthening the BEN MAPP II Project
The establishment of the EARC is a significant boost to the Building Effective Network Project – Multi-Annual Programme Plan Phase II (BEN MAPP II) being implemented in partnership with Cheshire Disability Services Kenya. As one of the project’s supported schools, Rabuor Primary School is now better positioned to serve as a model for inclusive education and disability inclusion.
"The opening of the EARC at Rabuor Primary School is a major step towards ensuring that learners with disabilities receive timely assessments and the support they need to succeed. It brings services closer to the community and strengthens our commitment to inclusive education for all."— County Special Needs Education Coordinator
The new facility will also strengthen collaboration among schools, teachers, parents, EARC officers, and education stakeholders in promoting inclusive learning environments throughout Kadibo Sub-county.
Collaboration among education stakeholders is key to sustaining inclusive education in Kadibo.
A Lasting Impact
The commissioning of the EARC at Rabuor Primary School represents more than the opening of an office—it is a commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind because of disability. By bringing assessment services closer to communities, the centre will help identify learners earlier, facilitate appropriate educational support, and create greater opportunities for children with disabilities to thrive in school and beyond.
